It’s another busy week for me. A couple of weeks ago, WhatsApp finally brought the sticker feature to its popular messaging app. Other than working on app development and writing tutorials, I love to spend time on other side projects. Earlier this year, together with a few friends, we started a side project to share funny stories on Instagram
(in Chinese) with the goal of publishing a comic book.
With the launch of WhatsApp stickers, I thought it would be perfect for us to create some stickers as a way to market our comic brand. If you’re familiar with iMessage Sticker
, the way to distribute WhatsApp stickers is quite similar. You will need to create an app and publish it on the App Store. It’s not hard to develop the app because WhatsApp has already put up a sample app
on GitHub. What’s hard is to get Apple’s approval. Meanwhile, I’m still struggling with the approval process that my app has been rejected multiple times for the following reason:
We noticed that your app provides the same feature set as other apps submitted to the App Store; it simply varies in content or language, which is considered a form of spam.
In the first few weeks, after the launch of WhatsApp Stickers, there is a surge of WhatsApp sticker app submissions. Most of them were built on top of the sample app. At first, I guessed this was the main reason why Apple rejected the app. However, after rewriting the app with a redesigned UI, Apple still rejected my app for the same reason. I’m not the only developer facing the issue. You can find other cases here
. From what I heard from a couple of developers, even you are lucky to have your sticker app accepted, it is very hard to release an app update.
It seems to me Apple no longer accepts WhatsApp sticker apps. Do you share the same experience when publishing WhatsApp sticker apps? Or if you have any suggestion, please hit Reply and let me know. For your reference, we’ve opened our sticker app
for beta testing via TestFlight.
As always, don’t forget to check out all the great tutorials during weekend. I believe they will take your development skills to the next level.
